2 Types of Organ/Body Donation

by Susan Evans

If your loved one requested organ donation or that his or her body be donated to a medical school, here are some things for consideration:

Total body donation

  • This is an option, but not if you choose to be an organ and tissue donor.
  • Body donation to medical teaching facilities can take place immediately or after a service is held. This arrangement should be discussed by the loved one before death.

Organ and tissue donor

  • Check with your doctor or coroner regarding organ donation. Depending on what organs are donated, this does not disfigure the body; it will not interfere with having a funeral, including open casket services.
  • There is no cost to the donor’s family for the organ donation.
